Flattened Shapes
The “Flattened Shapes” portraits were painted in Brooklyn after I left art school, between 1978 and 1984. They marked the beginning of my independent artistic voice — simplifying form and color into bold, flattened fields. Most of these paintings are now lost; some were stolen in the Portland, Oregon bus station in 1983. A few survive, including “Greengage Plum” and “Green Nancy.” These images were scanned from old slides, which accounts for the uneven brightness, but they remain an important record of this formative period.
